2021 Summer Reading and Viewing Requirements


Due to the COVID-19 Restrictions, listed texts will not be available for purchase through St. Thomas More. However, all are available via other book vendors such as Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, etc. Students will also be allowed to utilize eBooks that may be purchased through Amazon or other vendors and read on Kindles, iPads, or other tablets and devices.
 

For students who want to complete their AR summer reading early, the STM Library will be open for testing on the following dates:

Wednesday, June 16 | 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Wednesday, July 21 | 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Wednesday, August 11 | 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. (Orientation Day)
 

Students may test on Orientation Day as well as before/after school and during their lunch periods before their deadlines listed below. 

Seniors: August 13
Juniors: August 16
Sophomores: August 17
Freshmen: August 18

 

Required Books and Films:


Students are required to take Accelerated Reader tests on all assigned and choice novels. There are no AR tests on movies, but students should be ready for some type of assessment when school starts.

English I (CP)

    • Book: Night by Elie Wiesel
    • Film: Hotel Rwanda (1994 – PG-13)

English I (H)

    • Books: Night by Elie Wiesel and The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

English II (CP)

    • Book: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
    • Film: Life of Pi (PG - 2012)

English II (H)

    • Books: The  Alchemist - by Paulo Coelho and Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis  Please note that Out of the Silent Planet is the first text in a trilogy. Students are only required to read this first text.  They are not required to read Perelandra or That Hideous Strength
    • Film: Life of Pi (PG - 2012)

English III (CP)

    • Book: Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
    • Film: Dead Poets’ Society (1989 – PG)

English III (H) and (AP)

    • Book: Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
    • Film: Dead Poets’ Society (1989 – PG)

English IV (H and DE)

    • Film: The King’s Speech (R-2010) (strongly preferred with parental permission) OR A Beautiful Mind (PG-13 – 2001)

English IV (AP)

    • Books: 1984 by George Orwell and Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

Additional Reading Opportunity:


During the summer, all STM students may earn an additional 50/50 or 100/100 for the first quarter by earning a specified number of AR points in addition to their required reading. Books may be found using AR Bookfinder.

    • For a bonus 50/50 grade: earn 10 AR points through extra summer reading
    • For a bonus 100/100 grade: earn 20 AR points through extra summer reading

Please note:

    • Points earned from required summer reading do NOT count toward this bonus grade.
    • These additional/bonus points do NOT count toward students’ mandatory first-quarter AR reading requirement.

Students may not test on books that appear on our Exclusion List, which should be checked before beginning any novel of choice. Current movies made from books are automatically on the exclusion list when released.
