Coaches
Danny Broussard, Head Coach
Danny Broussard joined the initial Cougar Basketball coaching staff of 1982, beginning his head coaching career the following year. While at St. Thomas More, Broussard has been named “Coach of the Year” in Louisiana four times - Class 4A in 1997 and 1999, Class 3A in 1986 and NOLA.com Coach of the Year in 2013. He has been named district coach of the year 19 times and All-Acadiana coach of the year 8 times. Broussard has led his Cougars to the "Top 28" tournament eleven times, winning the state championship in 1986, 2013, 2018 and 2019 and a runner-up in 1987, 1999, and 2003. He has amassed an impressive 273-71 district record and a career record of 914 wins and 296 losses. On January 24, 2016, Broussard won his 900th career win at the age of 56 against Westgate. Broussard is married to the former Dena Landry and has three children: Lacey ’04, Paige ’07, and Chase ’11.
Ryan Welty, Asst. Coach
Ryan enters his 2nd year as an STM assistant coach in Basketball and Track. In his first year the Cougar Basketball team reached the state championship finals and finished as State Runner-ups.
Ryan played basketball at Lafayette High School under coach Clifton Brown. In 2005 he began his coaching career at Lafayette High as the head freshman, head JV, and assistant varsity coach. In 2008 Lafayette High won its first and only state championship title in boys basketball. In 2010 Ryan joined the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Men's Basketball program under Bob Marlin. There he served as the teams video coordinator and was elevated to director of player personnel in 2016. At UL the Cajuns won 3 conference championships, made 1 NCAA tournament appearance, 1 NIT appearance, 1 CIT appearance, and 2 CBI tournament appearances. In 2023 he served as an assistant coach at Comeaux High School. Ryan is married to the former Caroline Landry and has 3 children Owen, Anna, and Abigail.
